  • Blade Runner 2049 & Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Saw these two films on iTunes yesterday. Not sure why they are getting such high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. The settings in the original BR was always night time when Deckhard was outside. 2049 was mostly day time. Also, Deckhard's apartment was mostly darkly lit, whereas K's apartment is really bright. The dark lighting in the original gave it a more lonely, dystopian feel. Plot was also very thin. The visuals were impressive though.

SW has been too Disneyfied - too many attempts at humor and a cute, chubby, funny asian taking a large chunk of the screen time (more attempts at humor? to appeal to an asian audience worldwide?). Would have been icing on the cake if she started singing Disney songs. Plot was also weak - nothing that we haven't already seen before. I was bored enough in some parts to play with my phone.

    Thoughts?

I thought BR was a good movie, if a bit slow. I do agree that the lighting was brighter than the original, but not always in a bad way. For example, the orange lighting in the casino where Harrison Ford is pouring whiskey was strange, but oddly beautiful. I haven't seen SW:TLJ and probably won't either. I thought The Force Awakens and A New Hope were ok.

Coincidentally, casinos feature prominently in both films. I was a bit uncomfortable with the objectification of women in BR. Naked girls everywhere, even in the desert there are huge statues of naked girls in high heels. Ryan Goslings is a total hottie. SW was ok. The asian girl was likable and pulled her weight on the screen.

She did pull her weight. I hope to see more of her in other films in the future.

No interest in SW but my friends recommend BR, so I hope to see that soon. Will report back.

My favorite funny scene from SW.

Skywalker: Who are you? Where did you come from?
        Rei: Nowhere.
        Skwkr: Nobody comes from nowhere.
        Rei: Jakku.
Skwkr: Alright, that really is pretty much nowhere. Why are you here, Rei from nowhere?

Everybody in the theatre laughed at this.
